🔧 How to Start Your Kohler Engine: A Step-by-Step Guide

Starting your Kohler engine is simple when you follow the right steps. Whether you’re new to outdoor power equipment or just need a refresher, this guide will walk you through the process to ensure safe and reliable operation.

✅ 1. Check the Oil Level

Locate the two yellow dipsticks on your engine, they both lead to the same oil reservoir. Unscrew one out, wipe it clean, screw it back on and off, then check the level.

Use 10W-30 oil, unless otherwise specified in your owner's manual. Add oil if needed.

✅ 2. Check the Fuel Level

Ensure the fuel tank is at least half full with clean, fresh gasoline. Old fuel can cause starting issues.

✅ 3. Inspect the Air Filter

Remove the air filter cover and inspect the filter.

Replace it if it’s dirty, clogged, or oily, as this affects engine performance.

✅ 4. Verify the Emergency Stop Switch

Make sure the emergency stop button is popped up. If it’s pushed down, the engine will not run.

Twist it to the right to release it.

✅ 5. Turn the Fuel Lever On

Set the fuel lever to the "ON" position to allow gas flow to the engine.

✅ 6. Engage the Choke

If the engine is cold, move the choke lever to "ON" to enrich the fuel mixture for easier starting.

✅ 7. Set the Throttle

Move the throttle lever to ¼ to ½ throttle to allow enough air/fuel mix during startup.

✅ 8. Start the Engine

  • Pull the recoil starter cord firmly

  • Or use the electric start if your unit has one

✅ 9. Adjust After Starting

Once the engine is running:

  • Set the choke to "OFF"

  • Lower the throttle to idle

✅ 10. Warm Up the Engine

Let the engine run at idle for 2–3 minutes before increasing to full throttle for your task.
